History of Boulevarding
Boulevarding was born on September 2, 2000, at the occasion of the first home game of the newly-built Gerald J. Ford Stadium. SMU’s president at the time, R. Gerald Turner, was inspired by University of Mississippi’s tailgating tradition on “The Grove” a 10-acre grassy plot in the center of Ole Miss, and wanted to initiate a similar campus tradition on the Boulevard. Prior to the construction of Ford Stadium, the Mustangs were playing home games at the Cotton Bowl. The return of an active football stadium to campus was cause for celebration and the start of a new tradition in which the community could gather together.
