January 2026 Freeze Event

During recent inclement weather, the OFPM team worked diligently to remove snow and ice, helping ensure a safe and accessible campus. We recognize and appreciate their commitment to serving the SMU community.

Focus on Pathways

  • North side of campus to the apartments along Daniel
  • Perkins Administration Building and the President’s pathways
  • Moore, Martin, Smith, and Perkins entries
  • Memorial Health Center entry at Bishop Boulevard
  • Fraternities
  • All remaining pathways

To replenish stock, orders placed for:

  • 30 pallets ice melt
  • Two 200 gallons liquid brine totes

Inventory of granular ice melt

  • 8 pallets (pallet = 50 50-pound bags)
  • Two 55-gallon drums

January 21 Required Atmos Service Interruption

Required Switch to Diesel for Boiler Operation

  • Our plant operations team was successful in converting 2 of the boilers to diesel and one boiler continued natural gas consumption due to mechanical system valve failure. 
  • Diesel on hand – 2 tanks with 14,348 gallons of diesel
  • Refilled 24,935 gallons of diesel
  • Current inventory 13,808 gallons of diesel

Total gallons consumed: 25,475

Electrical Service Curtailment Notice

  • Warning of a possible electrical reduction was received on January 21st but never actuated through the freeze event.
