Marcela Fuentues joined SMU English as the inaugural Sterling R.E. Havens Endowed Professor in Creative Writing Fiction in August 2026. Fuentes has expertise in fiction, Latinx and Southwest literature. Before joining SMU English, she was an associate professor of creative writing at Texas Christian University. Fuentes is a novelist and essayist whose work is rooted in Tejano culture family, and the Texas-Mexico borderlands. Her debut novel, Malas (Viking, 2024) was selected a Good Morning America Book Club pick and winner of the American Book Award. She is also a Pushcart Prize winning writer who has appeared in literary journals such as the Kenyon Review and Ploughshares.
