Kappa Alpha Theta FAQ

Students interested can go to to learn more about the Beta Sigma chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta.

Kappa Alpha Theta will join SMU Panhellenic in the first round of recruitment to share more about their organization and how to join. They will then hold a separate recruitment process (led by inter/national representatives) in the early fall semester, shortly following the Panhellenic formal recruitment process in fall 2026.

Students interested in joining a fraternity or sorority at SMU must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Students must be enrolled in at least 12 hours during the semester in which they plan to join.
  2. New students must have completed new student orientation requirements and attended all required Stampede programs.
  3. Achieve a 2.0 cumulative GPA, calculated on a 4.0 GPA scale. This can be demonstrated through high school transcripts for incoming first-year students, or through my.SMU or transfer records for upper-class students.
  4. Not be placed on conduct probation or higher with the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards during the semester in which a student plans to join prior to initiation.
  5. Not currently be an initiated member of any other National Panhellenic Conference organization.
  6. Students who receive a bid of membership through primary recruitment after signing the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) are not eligible to explore any other Panhellenic organization until the next primary recruitment (one full calendar year).

No, no offer of membership is ever guaranteed when exploring fraternity and sorority life, and students are always encouraged to keep an open mind about membership in any sorority. Students interested in joining the Panhellenic community have several options:

  1. Students can continue to register and participate in Panhellenic primary recruitment and can explore Kappa Alpha Theta’s separate recruitment process if they do not receive a bid or choose to withdraw during recruitment.
  2. Students can choose to sign up and take part in Kappa Alpha Theta’s separate recruitment process only, and if they do not receive a bid can explore any continuous open bidding options for Panhellenic.
  3. SMU Panhellenic typically has 1-3 organizations that continue to extend bids post recruitment in a process called continuous open bidding. It is open for all students who meet the eligibility requirements and did not receive a bid in primary recruitment as well as for students who did not participate in primary recruitment at all.

Kappa Alpha Theta is not and has never been associated with The Society. Participation in The Society will not result in an automatic invitation to membership in Beta Sigma Chapter. As a reminder, joining derecognized student organizations, like The Society, is a violation of the SMU Student Code of Conduct.

The Beta Sigma Chapter house on University Blvd will continue to be leased to female SMU students through the 2026-2027 academic year. Chapter members will have access to the chapter room in the lower level of the house throughout the year but will be restricted from the upstairs and living areas. The chapter will be looking for members to move into the house as residents for the 2027-2028 academic year.
