Crossing the Finish Line

SMU has believed in you since the beginning, let us help you graduate.

Working with faculty, advisors and school academic services offices, the Office of Student Success and Retention (SSR) identifies students who have stopped attending SMU but have not graduated, or continuing students who may not be able to graduate without financial assistance. Students' academic records are reviewed to determine the feasibility of graduating within six years. SSR connects with these students to support their degree completion.

Understanding Discontinuation and Reactivation

If you have taken time away from SMU and have not been enrolled for two regular (fall or spring) semesters, your student record becomes discontinued—meaning you are no longer eligible to register for classes until your enrollment is reactivated. While this may sound final, it’s simply an administrative step, and many students successfully return to complete their SMU degree.

Reactivation allows you to pick up where you left off and continue your academic journey with renewed focus and support. To begin the process, you’ll submit a brief personal statement about your readiness to return, ensure any holds are cleared, and meet key deadlines related to advising, housing, and financial aid. Our team is here to help you navigate each step and connect you with the resources you need to finish strong at SMU.
