State Prepaid College Plans

Overview

State Prepaid Plans enable families to lock in future tuition costs at participating colleges and universities, helping to reduce the overall cost of higher education.

State Plans Managed by SMU

SMU works directly with the following prepaid tuition programs:

  • Alabama PACT Program
  • Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan
  • College Illinois Prepaid Tuition Program
  • Kentucky Affordable Prepaid Tuition (KAPT)
  • Michigan Education Trust (MET)
  • Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Program (MPACT)
  • Nevada Prepaid Tuition Plan
  • South Carolina Tuition Prepayment Program (SCTPP)
  • Texas Guaranteed Tuition Plan (formerly Texas Tomorrow Fund)

Note: The Texas Promise Fund is not a state plan. Payments from it may be sent directly to SMU as a regular 529 plan payment.

How to Redeem a State Prepaid Plan

Step 1 – Request Verification

  • Contact your State Prepaid Plan administrator and request a Student Verification Letter.
  • Make sure the letter lists your name, plan coverage, and approved tuition/fee amounts.

Step 2 – Send Verification to SMU
Submit the verification letter by one of the following:

Step 3 – Conditional Credit Applied

  • The SMU Third-Party Billing Office places a conditional credit on your student account for the approved amount.
  • This placeholder prevents late fees or holds while payment is pending.

Step 4 – Balance Responsibility

  • Any remaining tuition or fee balance not covered by the plan is the responsibility of the student.

Coverage Information

  • State Prepaid Plans cover Fall and Spring tuition and general student fees.
  • SMU does not bill for Intersessions (May, Summer, January) unless specifically instructed by the plan owner.
